Salisbury Students and the Alleged Attack
According to a news report, one of the students placed an ad on a dating app for gay men, falsely stating that a 16-year-old male was seeking a sexual partner. The unidentified victim answered the ad and agreed to meet the supposed partner at an off-campus apartment. When the victim arrived, the defendants, who range in age from 18 to 21, allegedly beat him. The victim suffered bruising and a broken rib and was also subjected to verbal abuse, the report said.
One of the defendants allegedly filmed the attack, which lasted for five or six minutes, the news article said. The victim tried to leave repeatedly, but some of the defendants supposedly stopped him and threw him on the ground. The man was eventually able to leave but did not call the police, according to the report.
Law enforcement became aware of the situation after one of the defendants showed the video to an individual who alerted Salisbury University, the article said. Police used the video to track down the victim, and the man told the officers what happened. Police said the defendants targeted the victim based on his sexual preference, according to the article.
Criminal Charges and Suspension from School
Prosecutors initially charged the 15 defendants with hate crimes, as well as assault, false imprisonment, and reckless endangerment, the news report said. Hate crime charges were later dropped against 12 of the defendants. Salisbury University condemned the attack and suspended the students. They cannot enter the campus, take classes virtually, or attend any school-sponsored events. Seven of the students belonged to a fraternity that expelled them from membership. According to the article, the university also suspended the fraternity from campus.
