Student Nurse Defense: Georgetown University School of Nursing

The Georgetown University School of Nursing (Georgetown Nursing) is a private nursing school established in 1903 in Washington, D.C. As an elite institution and one of the country's most prestigious nursing schools, the institution offers unique graduate and undergraduate programs for aspiring nursing professionals. The School of Nursing's history and reputation make it an excellent – yet competitive – choice for students, opening doors to high-quality professional positions in the future. But to remain part of Georgetown Nursing and benefit from its training programs and your degree, you must maintain strict professionalism, high ethical conduct, and avoid academic issues. If you can't keep up with your peers or violate the honor code, you face sanctions that detrimentally affect your future.

Getting into a nursing school like Georgetown is no easy feat. With its competitive enrollment process and high expectations, you invested much time and money to join the institution. Georgetown has a formidable reputation regarding behavioral, professional, and academic expectations, naturally leading to stress and pressure. A lapse in judgment, genuine error, or violation leads to significant consequences, preventing you from graduating on time, if at all. But mistakes happen, and they are part of the learning process. Or your personal or academic life may be the cause of your lag or your errors. Regardless of the reason, you deserve fair representation. Don't wait until the matter escalates – contact the Lento Law Firm Student Defense Team or call today at 888-535-3686.

Professional and Academic Expectations

Since you are a future nurse, you are in a position of public trust. Training for this high-pressure career starts when you are in nursing school, and Georgetown has heavy expectations. Students must maintain professional standards that befit their future roles as nurses, their roles as students, and fellow peers. Students who repeatedly violate the standards of professionalism face reputation damage, sanctions, and dismissal. However, maintaining adequate academic performance is just as important as your demeanor, indicating that you can apply in practice what you learned in theory. If you cannot keep up or maintain your grades, you face dismissal due to chronically poor academic performance. Although remediation is an option, it also comes with its challenges. It imposes additional expectations when it comes to your performance.

Conduct and Ethical Standards

Georgetown University has an institution-wide honor system and standard of conduct that students must abide by. According to the official website, Georgetown prohibits dishonest student conduct, regardless of motive. It provides a list and explanation of some actions deemed violations, including:

  • Cheating on exams and other assignments
  • Abuse of library privileges
  • Committing plagiarism by not giving credit to the author of a work
  • Contract cheating
  • Abuse of shared electronic media to intentionally deprive others of using it for academic purposes
  • Using False citations
  • Submitting work for multiple purposes
  • Submitting false data, which is a form of academic fraud
  • Falsifying academic documents such as transcripts, registration forms, letters of recommendation, and medical certifications of absence

Georgetown also has a university-wide Code of Ethical Conduct that emphasizes honesty and integrity and goes over the institution's standards on student and faculty behavior. Going against any of these principles leads to an investigation and a hearing before the Honor Council.

Adjudication Process

Students who violate the ethical, professional, and academic expectations at Georgetown Nursing must attend a hearing. During the hearing process, the student may present their side of the story and supporting evidence or documentation to the panel members. Once the hearing ends, the council deliberates to determine if the student committed a violation. If the student commits one, the board begins the sanctioning process and divides it into two phases.

  • Phase I: The board decides on sanctions without taking any circumstances into consideration
  • Phase II: The Board then decides to decrease or increase the sanction's severity depending on multiple factors, such as whether the student shows remorse or if this is a repeated offense. During this time, the student's records are part of the decision-making process.

Once the board decides on the sanction, they send their recommendation to the Dean, who makes the final decision. Sanctions depend on the severity of the issue and the factors mentioned in phase two, including:

  • Letter of reprimand
  • A letter of censure Level I
  • Permanent letter of censure
  • Transcript notation Level I
  • Permanent Transcript Notation
  • Suspension
  • Dismissal

A suspension or dismissal from the university has disastrous implications for your future, especially from an institution like Georgetown. With so much on the line, never attempt to take on the issue alone. The sooner you speak to the Lento Law Firm Student Defense Team, the higher the chances of a positive outcome.
