Student Defense: Penn State University College of Medicine

Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine (PSCOM) is a state-related graduate medical school established in 1967 in Hershey, Pennsylvania. PSCOM is part of the Pennsylvania State University complex, with 26 science and clinical departments and numerous clinical programs. This prestigious medical school awards the MD, Ph.D., Master's, and an MD/Ph.D. program along with multiple other degree options for students wishing to enter the healthcare field. As a highly competitive and fast-paced medical school, students benefit from the experience of its staff members and have the chance to work alongside peers from different backgrounds and cultures. But to benefit from the perks that PSCOM has to offer, medical students must abide by the code of conduct and maintain satisfactory academic progress. Failure to do so leads to issues that harm their future, such as suspension and permanent dismissal.

Being a medical student is a notoriously stressful part of your life. The pressure to keep up with your peers and succeed is immense, with long and rigorous study times. Due to this pressure, many students falter and make mistakes. And while your professors expect errors to happen and consider them part of the learning process, some mistakes have heavier implications, especially for egregious or repeated violations. With all that can go wrong, you need the help and experience of the LLF Law Firm and the LLF Law Firm Education Law Team. With their experience working with medical students nationwide, they help decrease the likelihood of receiving sanctions that can upend your future and ruin your reputation.

Common Reasons for Dismissal

Dismissal from medical school is a serious issue with short- and long-term repercussions. Some of the most common reasons for expulsion from medical school include violating the code of conduct, academic misconduct, lack of professionalism, ethical and behavioral issues, and lack of progress. Medical schools do not take these issues lightly, especially since they have a reputation to maintain and want to level the playing field for all students. However, the implications of dismissal are severe, especially coming from an institution as prestigious as PSCOM. Dismissal leads to wasted time and effort, unexpected financial burdens, and reputation damage. Moreover, enrolling in another medical school is much more difficult as admissions officers prefer to select students with unblemished records. With so much at stake, working with the LLF Law Firm and the LLF Law Firm Education Law Team increases the likelihood of receiving a favorable case outcome.

Adjudication Process at PSCOM

According to the Code of Conduct listed in the Student Handbook, PSCOM expects students to demonstrate professional and ethical behavior befitting their future roles as physicians. Per the code, any person who believes that a medical student is engaging in prohibited behavior must notify the Senior Director of the Medical School. Once the SD receives the report, they review it to determine whether the issue requires a resolution through the official student conduct process. During this time, the SD may consult with the complainant and the impacted party (if any) before deciding on the next steps. The SD then schedules an informational meeting with the respondent to review the allegations, go over the student conduct process, and review appropriate actions for resolving the issue. The code mentions that students may have a support person present during this and any subsequent meeting. If the student and SD disagree on a resolution, the matter escalates to an Administrative Conference.

The Administrative Conference is similar to a hearing, where students accused of wrongdoing may defend themselves against allegations and submit evidence. Once the Administrative Conference ends, the panel creates an Action Plan depending on the outcome. The outcomes include administrative sanctions such as a formal warning, conduct probation, suspension, indefinite suspension, exclusion, loss of student housing, and expulsion.

Appeals Process

Fortunately, you can appeal a suspension or expulsion sanction within five business days to the Appeals Body. To do so, you must submit a written appeal letter and include the reason for your request. These include a procedural irregularity or bias that significantly impacted the outcome, the belief that the sanctions are disproportionate to the violation, or the emergence of new information that may alter the decision had it existed during the conference. Once the Appeals Body receives the request, they consider the appeal. They may modify the action plan or send it back to the SD, recommending additional fact-finding, another resolution, or case dismissal. Although the appeals process is a chance to change the outcome and receive a lesser sanction, there are no guarantees that the Appeals Committee will not impose a suspension or dismissal sanction. That is why working with the LLF Law Firm and the LLF Law Firm Education Law team may help during this process.
