Defending Students: Saint Anthony College of Nursing

The Saint Anthony College of Nursing (SACN) is a private nursing school established in 1915 in Rockford, Illinois. It is part of the OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center, which dates back to 1899. This long-standing and historic nursing school allows you to train with excellent faculty and peers who share the same goals and future careers. The nursing school offers multiple graduate and undergraduate programs, such as the BSN, RN to BSN, and DNP degrees. With an emphasis on creating an educational and nurturing environment, you can benefit from the nursing school's solid history of knowledge and experience. But to benefit from SACN's degrees and reputation, you must also demonstrate that you are progressing academically and avoid professional, behavioral, and ethical lapses.

As a nursing school student, you may not know all the rules and policies that govern the everyday intricacies of such an institution. Although you may try your best, it is common for mistakes and lapses in judgment to happen. Some mistakes, however, are more severe than others and have equally serious repercussions, like probation, suspension, and dismissal. These can delay your graduation or prevent you from receiving your degree. When you hear word of allegations against you, don't wait until it is too late. Send a message to the Lento Law Firm Education Law Team to learn more, or call 888-535-3686 to discuss the next steps.

Code of Conduct and Professional Behavior

According to the Student Handbook at SACN, students must strive not to violate the honor code and partake in activities that go against the principles of their future profession. Some common reasons students face sanctions include plagiarism, cheating, and academic violations. Others have to do with classroom behavior and your interactions with your peers. Besides maintaining a professional demeanor and behavior, you must keep up academically with your peers to progress to the next phase of your program. If you violate these rules, you must face the Undergraduate Admission and Progression Committee or the Graduate Admission and Progression Committee, depending on your degree. It's essential to avoid sanctions and committing violations as they can severely affect your future, reputation, and progress. The Lento Law Firm Education Law Tea is by your side when you face issues, from the initial steps of the investigation phase to the appeal process when necessary.

Adjudication Process at SACN

Any member of the Saint Anthony University campus may submit a report against a student they believe violated the code of conduct. Once the designated committee receives the report, they review the matter and determine whether to pursue due process or close the case. If they decide to pursue it, they inform the student about the charges and give them a chance to respond and resolve the issue through an informal meeting or petition for a hearing.

If you petition for a hearing, you will attend the meeting and stand before the hearing panel to defend against the allegations. The hearings can be for academic issues or issues related to student conduct violations. After presenting your evidence, documents, statement, and other relevant information, the panel members deliberate and recommend sanctions. Fortunately, you can appeal the panel's decision through the student appeal process.

Appeal Process

Students may appeal the panel's decision by completing a petition form that contains the reason for the student's request. They must submit this petition within seven days of receiving the panel's answer. Once the President receives the appeal, they convene a meeting with the Judicial Committee to review the petition and determine whether they will amend, reject, or accept the panel's decision. The Disciplinary Action Appeal Committee may attend this meeting and hear the petition. Once they review the details, they make a recommendation to the President. The President issues the final decision within five days of receiving the panel's recommendations. No further appeal is possible after this process.

Sanctions and Their Consequences

Sanctions adversely affect your chances of graduating on time and can wreak havoc on your future and reputation. While some sanctions are minor, others come with a hefty price tag regarding what to do next and all the effort and time lost while working towards your degree. Sanctions like dismissal and expulsion are especially problematic, as they may prevent you from attending another nursing school due to the notation on your transcript. When facing any hearing process, always speak to the Lento Law Firm Education Law Team before taking action. They can help you prepare for the hearing, guide you through the process, and be a shoulder to rely on when navigating this stressful and complex process.
