Student Defense: Medical University of South Carolina College of Nursing

The Medical University of South Carolina College of Nursing (MUSC CON) is a public nursing school established in 1884 in Charleston, South Carolina. It is part of the Medical University of South Carolina, a public medical and research university. MUSC CON initially started as a two-year nursing degree program, expanding over the years to offer the Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Master of Science, PhD, and DNP degrees. As a nursing student at MUSC CON, you can benefit from the decades of experience and professional opportunities that the nursing school offers. However, you must maintain excellent behavior and academic performance to remain enrolled.

As a nursing student, you worked hard to meet the admissions standards at MUSC CON and receive placement in your program of choice. However, nursing school is far from a walk in the park, and students must meet the high expectations that a position of public trust requires. Due to the stress, expectations to succeed, and external factors, some students may falter and commit violations without intending to. Others may experience lapses in judgment due to the many issues they may encounter that have nothing to do with their usual behavior. Regardless of the issue, you need the experience of the Student Defense Team at the Lento Law Firm to reduce the likelihood of a negative outcome. When faced with sanctions, contact the Student Defense Team here or call the Lento Law Firm at 888-535-3686 for more information.

Professionalism and Academic Standards

Nursing students at MUSC CON must abide by the professionalism standards outlined in the Code of Conduct in the Student Handbook. In terms of professionalism, the College of Nursing expects students to demonstrate compassion and respect for each person's inherent dignity, worth, and unique attributes. Thus, students must demonstrate behavior that includes collaboration, compassion, innovation, integrity, and respect. At the same time, nursing students must keep up with their program requirements and avoid academic issues. While professional behavior is an integral part of your training as a future nurse, you must also apply theory to practice and continue to improve to progress to the next part of your training. Students who have trouble academically may face placement on probation and must remediate their grades to be in the clear.

Academic Misconduct

MUSC CON takes allegations of academic misconduct seriously. It does not tolerate actions that give some students an unfair advantage over others. To level the playing field, the College of Nursing defines what actions constitute academic misconduct and maintains that it imposes sanctions on those who violate the code. Examples of actions that may lead to sanctions include:

  • Plagiarism by failing to cite sources appropriately, paraphrasing, or omitting citations
  • Cheating by using any unauthorized means, such as technology or notes on tests, quizzes, and academic activities
  • Unauthorized group work when the academic exercise calls for individuality
  • Multiple submissions of assignments to different professors for credit
  • Tampering with academic records or falsifying documents, data, materials, or sources
  • Deceit
  • Attempting to commit an Honor Code violation
  • Failure to report a known violation

Violating the code of conduct comes with strict repercussions. However, it is not just the sanctions that have a negative impact on your future. Besides the stress and anxiety of having to face a hearing panel, you may also experience issues when it comes to clinical placement, your overall reputation, and your academic record. More severe sanctions, like suspension and dismissal, upend your future and leave a permanent mark on your record. With that mark, it is not easy to find another nursing school since admissions officers prefer blemish-free applications.

Adjudication Process

The hearing process at MUSC applies to all students attending the different colleges. To report a violation, an accuser must send a formal report to a Representative of the Honor Council. Once they receive the report, they investigate to determine whether the Student in Question committed a violation, if a student accepts responsibility, and whether the matter requires a hearing. If it proceeds to one, the student may provide documentation and make a statement to defend against the accusations. Once the hearing ends, the Honor Council deliberates and decides on an outcome by implanting sanctions if they find the student at fault. Sanctions include monitoring, probation, temporary dismissal, and expulsion from MUSC.

Fortunately, nursing students assigned sanctions may appeal the Honor Council's decision to the MUSC President, who appoints an Appeal Panel to review the request. The student can only appeal under the following conditions:

  • The hearing process experienced a procedural error that significantly impacted the hearing outcome
  • An indication of demonstrable prejudice or bias from an Honor Council Representative who voted during the hearing
  • Emergence of new information not available during the time of the formal hearing that may significantly affect the case outcome
  • Receiving a disproportionate sanction compared to the violation
  • No reasonable person may conclude, based on the evidence, that a violation occurred

The Appeal Panel conducts a meeting with the student to deliberate on whether the request may alter the Honor Council's decision. However, it is not a rehearing as per the policy. Once the panel makes a final decision, the student may no longer appeal.
