Academic Progress Standards at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University – Florida Campus
You know you want to keep your GPA as high as you can. After all, the higher your GPA, the more likely it is that you'll find a top-tier job out of college. Beyond this general aspiration, though, there actually is a definition of college success. Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University – Florida Campus maintains something called an academic standing policy. That policy defines success in very clear terms. It also sets up a series of increasingly serious sanctions you face any time your academic progress falters.
- Good Standing: Term GPAs over 3.2 can earn you Honor Roll and Dean's List honors at Embry-Riddle. Your primary goal, though, term-to-term, should be to keep your cumulative GPA at 2.0 or better. As long as you do that, you're considered to be in “good” standing.
- Academic Warning: Should either your term or cumulative GPAs fall below 2.0, you're issued an academic warning. Once you've received a warning, you have two semesters to return to good standing. Otherwise, you face more serious consequences.
- Academic Probation: If you have not returned to good standing after two semesters on warning status, the university places you on academic probation. This gives you two additional semesters to get your cumulative GPA back to the 2.0 mark.
- Academic Suspension: Four consecutive semesters with GPAs below 2.0 means suspension—complete separation from the university. You can petition for readmission, but you must have completed at least 15 hours at another institution and earned a minimum GPA of 2.5 for this work.
Embry-Riddle's standing policy makes no mention of dismissal, but if you fail to complete the required 15 hours while on suspension, you cannot return to the university. Further, if you do manage to return and continue to struggle, you face an additional suspension.
Dealing With Academic Sanctions
Suspension is never ideal. Even if you manage to return to Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University – Florida Campus, you'll have lost ground and delayed your graduation. It's never easy coming back to campus once you've been away. You may have lost your financial aid as a result of your suspension. Your transcript will carry a record of your suspension as well, which can be difficult to explain at job interviews.
If this is the situation you find yourself in, the Lento Law Firm attorney can work with you to complete the readmission application. We'll make sure your hours are in order and help you document any extenuating circumstances that might have led to your suspension in the first place.
The better option, though, is to avoid suspension altogether. The Lento Law Firm attorney can help you to do that as well. We know a number of useful strategies for keeping your GPA above the 2.0 level. For instance,
- Before accepting suspension, it's worth appealing directly to the dean of your specific college. If you've been dealing with a serious illness, a family emergency, or some other special circumstance, you may be able to convince the dean to give you more time to improve.
- If you consistently struggle to pass courses, you should visit the Disability Services office. You have a right to disability testing, and if you have ADD, ADHD, or some other condition, you can ask the university to set aside low grades and allow you to retake courses.
- An allegation of academic misconduct, like cheating or plagiarism, can cost you valuable grade points. Any time an instructor accuses you, you should challenge those accusations. Even if you are found responsible for an offense, you may be able to convince the university that your instructor's sanctions are too harsh.
- You can try negotiating with faculty over grades if you have a strong argument to make. For example, a high score on a cumulative final exam might suggest you deserve a higher course grade.
- You can also ask instructors for makeup and extra credit work. They can always say no, but there is no penalty for asking.
- Any time an instructor mistreats you in any way, you should report this to their department head. An instructor's misconduct shouldn't cost you grade points.
No two students' situations are exactly the same. As soon as you contact the Lento Law Firm, we'll sit down with you and go over exactly what you're dealing with.
