As artificial intelligence becomes more and more integrated into our online experience, challenges emerge when it comes to the use of AI-produced content in the context of education. Colleges and universities must be able to navigate the often fine line between permitting students to use AI as a helpful research tool and prohibiting them from using AI to replace the learning process.
Along the way, schools will make mistakes. Students will be unjustly accused of using AI improperly when, in fact, they either didn’t use it at all or used an acceptable AI tool to help them gather information that they legitimately incorporated into their own work. Schools may employ AI detection tools that falsely flag student work as being the product of artificial intelligence. And there may be confusion on the part of everybody – faculty, administration, and students – about what is an acceptable use of AI by students and what is not.

New Tools Bring New Challenges
Artificial intelligence tools are becoming an increasing part of our daily lives. Many email providers, for example, offer an AI tool that will both summarize the content of emails and attachments and suggest responses. Search engines such as Google and Bing incorporate AI-driven search results along with the traditional results generated by their search algorithms. Standalone AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Grok, Gemini, and Claude will quickly create very convincing and detailed responses based on user questions and prompts.
It can be challenging to take responses that are the product of artificial intelligence and make them your own. And it is not unusual for these AI-created responses to be incorrect. The quality of the AI response is dependent on the quality of the information that the AI tool uses to create the response. When students fail to double-check the accuracy of the information delivered by an AI tool, it can leave them vulnerable to accusations of improper use of AI for their coursework.
Similarly, some traditional writing tools used by students for many years to help them fine-tune their written work, such as Grammarly, are now incorporating AI into their applications. This can result in a student being accused of using AI improperly, even if the student had no intention of doing so.
