Pre-Med Student Discipline Defense: Yeshiva University

The pre-med program at Yeshiva University (YU) is world-renowned. YU pre-med students are making a name for themselves even before graduating and heading to medical school by making medical advancements through their undergraduate programs. In 2024, YU's pre-med students assisted in developing an app that uses AI to analyze mammograms and lead to early detection of breast cancer. Successfully finishing YU's pre-med program is a sure-fire way to position yourself for acceptance to a top US medical school.

Being a YU pre-med student is an accomplishment you should be proud of, but at the Lento Law Firm, we know that it also comes with great stress and responsibility. Common Issues Yeshiva University Pre-Med Students Can Face

Pre-med students can face many different issues during the course of their program. Unfortunately, even small disciplinary actions can permanently add to your academic record and cause issues when applying for medical school. The Lento Law Firm Student Defense Team is well-versed in addressing all types of issues pre-med students may face, from academic misconduct to Title IX violations.

Academic Misconduct

As a YU pre-med student, you are used to academic success. While you have put in a lot of hard work, it is likely that you have always been intelligent, and academics come naturally to you. However, college, especially YU's pre-med program, is different. You may be struggling academically for the first time in your life, which can lead many students to be tempted to commit academic misconduct. Academic misconduct can take many forms. Our Student Defense Team often sees the following types of academic misconduct:

Title IX Violations

Title IX is the federal law prohibiting sex-based discrimination on college campuses, but it likely sounds familiar to you from the numerous online Title IX trainings you did at the beginning of your time at YU. The law dictates what it is and how YU handles sexual harassment and misconduct allegations. The Lento Law Firm Student Defense Team has represented countless students facing Title IX violations, including for allegations of:

Code of Conduct Violations

Code of conduct violations are any behaviors that go against YU's rules, policies, and procedures. Common code of conduct violations include:

  • Assault
  • Threats
  • Drug possession and/or use
  • Theft
  • Property damage
  • Stalking
  • Cyberstalking
  • Social media policy violations
  • Cyber/digital crimes
  • Hazing

Yeshiva University's Disciplinary Action Process

YU has two documents that outline the disciplinary action process for pre-med students at the university: the Undergraduate Student Bill of Rights and the Non-Discrimination and Anti-Harassment Policy. For non-Title IX cases, the disciplinary action process will begin with the student being notified that a complaint has been filed against them. The student will then have a meeting with YU's Hearing Office. Unfortunately, YU doesn't allow students to be accompanied by anyone during this meeting. This means your parent and the Lento Law Firm attorney will not be physically there for support. You should never go into a meeting with the Hearing Office unprepared; the Lento Law Firm attorney will coach you through how the meeting will go and how to answer all questions in a way that is honest and an effective defense.

After the Hearing Office meeting, YU's Disciplinary Committee will make a determination and convey their decision to you. If you disagree with its decision, you have ten days from when you received notification of their decision to appeal your case in writing. The Lento Law Firm attorney will guide you through the appeal process and draft your appeal to the provost.

The process is slightly different when a complaint alleges a Title IX violation. If the school believes there has been a Title IX violation, it will notify you and begin an investigation. You will be allowed to respond to the allegations. YU may schedule a hearing or pursue an informal resolution of the complaint, depending on the nature of the complaint. The Lento Law Firm attorney will discuss the ins and outs of Title IX proceedings with you.
