Silenced By Your School’s Restrictive Speech Policies? The Lento Law Firm Can Help

Many students who enter college find their voices — and build confidence — by exercising their right to free speech. However, a recent survey of nearly 500 colleges and universities found that 85% have at least one policy that schools could use improperly to limit free speech on their campuses. The “Spotlight on Speech Codes” survey was conducted by the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expressions, an advocacy organization that protects free speech on college campuses. Some of the most common types of restrictive speech policies these institutes of higher learning involve:

  • Harassment and bullying,
  • Civility,
  • Protests and demonstrations,
  • Bias reporting,
  • Technology usage, and
  • Posting and distribution of materials.

The Foundation gave each college and university surveyed a rating based on how restrictive its policies were. One in five received a “red light” rating, meaning their policies “clearly and substantially” restrict free speech. Just over 65% received a “yellow light” rating, meaning their policies “impose vague regulations on expression.”

If you're the kind of person who likes to speak your mind, there's a good chance you may be accused with violating your school's speech policy. If you do, you need to build a robust case in your defense. Contact the Lento Law Firm's Student Defense Team today at 888.535.3686 or through our online form to see how our team can help.

Accused of Violating Your College or University's Restrictive Speech Policy?

The First Amendment of the United States Constitution grants all U.S. citizens the right to the freedom of speech. And while schools can implement and practice this right “in ways that do not interfere with schools' educational mission,” according to the National Coalition Against Censorship, college and university students have the same right. However, this doesn't prevent schools in the U. S. from silencing students when they wish to express their opinions. In some cases, schools can unfairly threaten and discipline students.

How can schools get away with this? Because often, students don't realize they have the power to fight back. If your college has unfairly accused you of violating school policies restricting free speech, you have the right to plead your case and defend yourself. You need the Lento Law Firm's Student Defense Team for the best possible outcome.

The First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution grants each U.S. citizen the right to free speech. This right doesn't end when you enter college. While several of these policies are designed to prevent behaviors that may harm students or interfere with the school's educational mission, many institutions of higher learning have severely restrictive policies in place to unfairly silence students and their right to free speech.
