Polypharmacy Is a Growing Problem Affecting Students Today

Posted by Joseph D. Lento | Apr 09, 2024 | 0 Comments

A new study by the University of Maryland finds that an increasing number of children and adolescents are being prescribed three or more psychiatric medications at the same time—a phenomenon known as polypharmacy. The study looked at information for patients 17 or younger, particularly among patients with disabilities or in foster care.

The information in the study has led some to raise alarms about the long-term effects of polypharmacy on children and young adults. And though the study only used data from one US state and cannot be generalized to the entire United States, there is concern among experts about the increase in polypharmacy. Possible Impact on Academic Performance

Polypharmacy could severely impact a student's academic performance, as mental health struggles that go untreated can be as detrimental as struggles treated inadequately. Polypharmacy can also involve medications with side effects that potentiate each other and can leave students struggling to focus, without motivation and failing grades.

In cases like that, the student can feel even more pressure to cheat or plagiarize, as that might feel like the only way to catch up.

Possible Impact on Behavior

Side effects from multiple medications can also affect a student's behavior in a significant way, with anxiety and mood swings being one of the most common presentations. These side effects can result in disruptive behavior and lead to disciplinary actions, particularly when the behavior is evaluated without any information about the possible root causes of it.

This, in turn, might discourage students from seeking help for their issues.

Rights and Accommodations

Polypharmacy might be a big problem affecting students today, but it's important to remember that the solution to the issues raised in the study and the issues of mental health struggles have to be seen comprehensively. Students with mental health challenges deserve not just the proper diagnosis and prescriptions tailored to that diagnosis and their age group, but understanding, accommodations like extended deadlines and alternative testing formats, and access to therapy and support groups.

Mental health challenges are not a choice. Addressing the complex link between polypharmacy, student discipline, and academic progression requires a multi-faceted approach, one that involves students, parents, doctors, and teachers.

Ultimately, the only way to empower students to thrive is by fostering environments that prioritize not just academic achievement, but mental health as well.
