Deja Vu: More Hazing Allegations Threaten Greek Life in VA, MD

Posted by Joseph D. Lento | Apr 05, 2024 | 0 Comments

The initiation process is part of the deal for many fraternity brothers and sorority sisters. While there have always been instances of hazing gone too far, the vast majority of Greek participants engage in time-honored rituals intended to foster tight bonds between the participants. However, universities have signaled a persistent, widespread crackdown on hazing that threatens Greek life.

Students caught up in hazing allegations must first protect themselves. While the fate of their fraternity or sorority is also of concern, your personal reputation must be a top priority. Call the Lento Law Firm Student Defense Team today at 888.535.3686 or contact us online about protecting you from hazing allegations.

Greek Participants at the University of Virginia Face Hazing-Related Discipline

Our focus is two recent news stories involving fraternities and sororities at the University of Virginia and the University of Maryland.

In Virginia, the esteemed university suspended the Kappa Sigma fraternity after a student fell down the stairs backward at the fraternity house, hitting their head and falling unconscious. Reports indicate that fraternity participants are being accused of causing the injury during a hazing incident.

The immediate suspension of the Kappa Sigma fraternity, pending further investigation, falls in line with greater political developments in Virginia.

In 2023, U.S. Senator Tim Kaine (Virginia's former governor) co-sponsored the Stop Campus Hazing Act, which would require by law every university to report alleged instances of hazing. This signals that universities face significant pressure to crack down on hazing, perhaps violating students' right to due process.

More Hazing-Related Discipline at the University of Maryland

In a similar story, University of Maryland officials ordered all Greek organizations to cease recruitment and social events after multiple chapters were accused of hazing. This is a significant move from the university to unilaterally halt some of the most significant aspects of being in a fraternity or sorority.

While student safety must be paramount, one cannot help but feel Greek organizations face immense scrutiny in today's political and social climate.

Discipline Against Greek Organizations Can Be Harsh and Swift

Discipline against Greek organizations poses several foreseeable problems related to due process. As attorneys who help students get the due process they deserve, we have seen the following:

  • A growing anti-Greek sentiment among administrators and lawmakers who have trained their disciplinary arms and legislative powers on fraternities and sororities nationwide
  • Students were unfairly disciplined due only to their affiliation with a Greek organization
  • The abridgment of students' rights during the adjudication of Greek-related disciplinary matters

Being branded responsible for hazing can lead to suspension, dismissal, and severe reputational harm.
