Student Defense: Northeastern University Bouvé College of Health Sciences School of Nursing

The Northeastern University Bouvé College of Health Sciences School of Nursing is a private nursing school established in 1925 in Boston, Massachusetts. The Nursing School is part of the Northeastern University Complex, housed between three other schools at Bouvé College of Health Sciences. Bouvé Nursing's dynamic curriculum incorporates behavioral sciences, arts and humanities, and the basics of nursing to help prepare students for the rigors of their future profession. But to remain enrolled, graduate on time, and avoid sanctions that affect your future, you must demonstrate that you have what it takes by maintaining professional behavior and steady academic progress.

As a nursing student, you may feel the effects of your curriculum seep into your daily life. Because training is rigid and learning theory and applying principles comes with significant responsibility, you may sometimes feel stressed or overwhelmed. These feelings may cause you to commit mistakes or lapses in judgment, paving the path to potential suspension or expulsion. With so much to juggle and just as much that can go wrong, taking action immediately once you learn of an allegation against you is critical. Academic and Professional Standards

Nursing schools like Bouvé implement strict academic and professional standards to maintain their reputation and level the playing field for all students. Regarding professionalism, nursing students are responsible for caring for patients, working with medical teams, and maintaining order once they graduate. Training for this position starts in nursing school, and if students cannot demonstrate behavior befitting their future professions, they may not graduate on time or at all. However, no matter how professional you are, you must also progress academically and keep up with your peers. Students who cannot meet the minimum grade requirements during courses, labs, and clinical work cannot progress unless they complete remediation. Any subsequent failure leads to dismissal from the program. Bouvé does provide some leeway in that it allows students to stay for two more semesters if they do not achieve good results in nursing, after which they can transition to another major.

Adjudication Process and Appeals

Any person who believes a nursing student at Bouvé violated the code of professionalism or conduct must submit a Professionalism Concern Form (PCF). Once submitted, the form goes to the School of Nursing Office of the Dean, who reviews the contents to determine if an investigation is necessary. Severe matters that lead to suspension or expulsion receive review by the Academic Standing Committee and the Assistant Dean. Depending on the severity of the matter, they may also refer the case to the Administrative Professionalism Conduct Board and escalate it to a hearing.

During the hearing, the nursing student presents their side of the issue and includes any documentation, data, or statements that support their claims. Once the panel hears statements and gathers evidence from both sides, they deliberate and recommend sanctions. If the nursing student disagrees with the sanction or decision, they may appeal it within ten business days. The student may only request an appeal for one of the following reasons:

  • A procedural violation that significantly compromised the investigation process or its conclusions
  • The evidence presented to the panel does not support the findings
  • The sanctions recommended by the panel are excessive in comparison to the findings
  • The emergence of significant new evidence unavailable during the time of the hearing that potentially impacts the case outcome

Once the Academic Standing Committee receives the appeal request, it determines if it meets the abovementioned conditions before proceeding with a new review. The student may also send the appeal to the Dean of the School of Nursing with the same appeal conditions. Once the Dean reviews the case, they decide on an outcome and send the student their decision within another ten business days. After this step, the student may no longer appeal the sanction.

Sanctions and Their Effects

Sanctions have debilitating effects on your future and may set you back significantly. No matter how far along you are in your program, a dismissal from nursing school means that you must start over somewhere else. However, it is not simple to pick up where you left off, and with the loss of time, money, and effort, you may not want to continue this career path altogether. With so much that can go wrong, don't wait until the appeal process to defend yourself. Call the Lento Law Firm Education Law Team as soon as you learn of a possible complaint.
