Using and Misusing ChatPDF

ChatPDF likes to refer to itself as “ChatGPT for PDFs.” That’s pretty significant for students. ChatGPT draws its responses largely from the internet. The preferred distribution method in academia, though, is PDF files. With ChatPDF, you upload a PDF or multiple PDF files, and the AI program allows you to work with those files in an almost infinite number of ways. You can ask for a summary, for example, or ask it to create a study guide so you can prepare for upcoming exams. You can ask it to search for answers to specific questions or develop topic ideas for a paper.

Of course, if used appropriately, all of these functions can help you become a better student. There’s nothing wrong with programs that make learning more efficient, programs that can save you time. With all that extra time, you can dig into subjects more deeply and devote your attention to thinking about data and concepts rather than merely digesting them.

You can understand, though, why some instructors might be wary of AI programs like ChatPDF. With the right prompt or series of prompts, you can talk ChatPDF into writing an entire essay on your behalf. If you can find the right seat in class and the right angle for holding your phone, you can use ChatPDF to answer questions during an exam.

So, let’s start simple, with your end of the AI equation. After all, the easiest way to avoid an academic misconduct charge is to avoid committing academic misconduct. What can you do to minimize the chance that you might even accidentally use ChatPDF to cheat?

  • Make sure you’re clear on what constitutes academic misconduct. Anything that could potentially give you an unfair advantage in completing your coursework can get you into trouble.
  • The problem is that it’s not always easy to know what qualifies as an “unfair advantage.” That means you also have to think through the nature and goal of the specific assignment. If, for instance, you’re asked to create an annotated bibliography, and you use ChatPDF to create summaries of your PDF sources, that’s almost certainly a violation. After all, summaries are what a bibliography is. The goal of the assignment is to learn how to write summaries yourself. On the other hand, creating summaries to help you quickly skim through articles for a research paper might be perfectly acceptable.
  • If you have any doubt at all about whether using ChatPDF violates the spirit of an assignment, ask your instructor. They can tell you pretty quickly what is and isn’t a violation. Plus, just by asking them, you’ll open up a dialogue and let them know that you’re committed to your education.

Responding to Allegations

Here’s the thing: when campuses are in panic mode, it’s not always easy to avoid an allegation, even if you’re careful. Misunderstandings happen. In fact, the advent of so-called AI detection AIs has made misunderstandings surprisingly common. Programs like GPTZero, Turnitin, and Copyleaks are designed to identify examples of AI writing, eliminating the possibility that students can use AI inappropriately. They’re far from foolproof, but unfortunately, faculty and administrators sometimes assume they are, with disastrous results.

An academic misconduct allegation can lead to lower grades on assignments, lower course grades, and sometimes outright course failure. Recently, in their efforts to stamp out digital cheating, universities have begun suspending and even dismissing students over allegations.

It’s important you recognize that you have rights. An accusation is not the same as a responsible (guilty) finding, and you have some important due process rights to protect you. Your school can’t simply dismiss you, for instance. It must afford you the right to a presumption of innocence. You are “not responsible” until proven “responsible.” You are entitled to official notice of any charges against you, and you should be allowed to make your full case at a university hearing.
