Grinnell College is a private liberal arts college established in 1846 in Grinnell, Iowa. Grinnell is one of the more prestigious liberal arts colleges in the nation, known for spearheading social activism efforts and not following a traditional curriculum with set courses. However, although the College deviates from rigid standards when choosing and participating in one’s major, it remains clear in its policies regarding all forms of misconduct. It does not take academic, behavioral, or sexual misconduct lightly. Students participating in these activities may face severe penalties, including suspension and expulsion.

The pre-med program at Grinnell College is called the pre-health program. It does not offer a specific major for medical school aspirants. However, the program does allow students to register for medical school later. As a pre-health student at Grinnell, you must follow the student handbook’s directions regarding managing behavior and maintaining a stellar conduct record. If you are a pre-health student facing accusations of academic, behavioral, or sexual misconduct at Grinnell, the first step is to contact the LLF National Law Firm Education Law Team. Core Values and Student Conduct

As a pre-health student, you aim to finish your program, excel academically, and maintain exceptional behavior to gain access to medical school. Although every medical school’s standards are different, you will not get into a competitive program of your choice if you engage in behavior that jeopardizes others. Since the healthcare path you embark on involves multiple steps, ensuring that you graduate from pre-health school without outstanding behavioral, academic, and sexual misconduct issues is paramount to your success.

The Student Handbook at Grinnell College applies to all students regardless of major. Grinnell lists detailed examples of multiple forms of misconduct and gives an overview of the processes and actions taken once a student commits a violation. Per the policy, the conduct program at Grinnell supports the Division of Student Affairs and College’s mission to create an environment of accountability and resolve issues in a socially just manner. Grinnell maintains that the core values of student conduct are integrity, honesty, and personal responsibility.

Academic Misconduct

Students may not engage in academic misconduct, which allows them to gain an unfair academic advantage over their peers. Examples of academic misconduct include plagiarism, cheating, allowing or aiding others to cheat, using external help without permission from authorized staff members, and similar actions. Students who engage in this behavior face penalties that vary on the nature of the violation and for repeated offenses.

Behavioral Misconduct

Behavioral misconduct is any form of violation that goes against the principles of honesty and integrity. Students may receive harsh penalties for engaging in behaviors such as disorderly or disruptive conduct or possessing and using forged documents and identification. Other examples include not following the alcohol and smoking policies or intentionally damaging College property and illegal possession.

Health and Personal Safety Misconduct

Misconduct that involves jeopardizing the safety of others by causing physical or psychological harm is a big deal at Grinnell and comes with substantial issues for pre-health students. These actions go against the health and safety standards of the College and include:

  • Harassment
  • Domestic/Dating Partner Violence
  • Physical Assault
  • Threatening Behavior
  • Hazing

Title IX / Sexual Misconduct

All forms of sexual misconduct are strictly prohibited at Grinnell. Like all educational institutions, the adjudication process for sexual misconduct is separate. This process has unique guidelines listed under the Grinnell College Policy, Procedures, and Guide to Preventing, Reporting, And Responding To Sexual Misconduct And Other Forms Of Interpersonal Violence. This policy applies to all matters relating to sexual and gender-based harassment, sexual assault, sexual exploitation, dating and domestic violence, stalking, and retaliation.

The College employs a Title IX coordinator to ensure compliance with the policy and oversees the College’s response to prohibited behavior. The College also has a Title IX response team.

Grinnell complies with all laws regarding Title IX offenses, including compliance with the Clery Act, which requires the College to report certain crimes on or near campus.

Adjudication Process

The handbook stipulates that there are multiple ways in which Grinnell initiates the adjudication process. The three central systems used are:

  1. Administrative Hearings
  2. College Hearing Boards
  3. Judicial Councils

Although these three systems have similar procedures, their jurisdictions and compositions differ.

Administrative Hearing

The administrative hearing is a process where the student may ask to have an alleged misconduct violation resolved in an informal and educational atmosphere. However, granting an academic hearing depends on the approval of the Dean of Students or their designee based on the nature of the violation.

If the Dean believes that the matter requires a different process, they may refer the case to the College Hearing Board or the Judicial Council. During an Administrative Hearing, the Dean meets with the complainant and the respondent, determines responsibility, and decides what educational outcomes are appropriate.

College Hearing Board

The College Hearing Board involves a factfinding board trained in student conduct procedures. This board hears cases that may lead to severe sanctions, such as dismissal and suspension. They attend to matters that include rule violations, harassment, assault (non-sexual), hate crimes, and other issues that may lead to dismissal.

Judicial Council

The Judicial Council is a student-run board that adjudicates minor allegations of misconduct. The issues that this council investigates are not those that may lead to dismissal.
