Indiana University School of Dentistry (IUSD) is a public dentistry school established in 1879 in Indianapolis, Indiana. It is the official dentistry school of Indiana University, with multiple degree programs and certifications offered. IUSD was previously involved in a cheating scandal where multiple students were found to have accessed the school’s electronic system to gain access to materials meant only for examinations. Due to this incident, the school has doubled down on detecting instances of academic misconduct and enforces a strict code of conduct that heavily penalizes students for engaging in any of its forms. If you are part of IUSD and are accused of engaging in academic misconduct, you may face sanctions that include suspension and dismissal.
While the field of dentistry is tough and requires years of academic effort, engaging in behavior that places you in a position where you have an advantage over your peers can lead to trouble. Although your professors understand that mistakes are a normal part of the learning process, some have more impactful implications on your progress and future. Even if you are completely innocent, charges of academic misconduct have short and long-term effects on your future, career prospects, and reputation. For these reasons, it’s essential to call LLF National Law Firm’s Education Law Team as soon as you learn of charges against you. Never take on the case alone – call 888-535-3686 for more information or send the team a message through the online portal.
Academic Misconduct Policy at IUSD
Appendix J in the Code of Professional Conduct mentions that academic misconduct is a professional and ethical offense and provides examples of actions that lead to sanctions. Some of these include:
- Giving or receiving information about an examination to others before receiving permission from a faculty member
- Plagiarism
- Forgery or the falsification of academic records, financial information, scientific data, research, or patient records
- Engaging in the abuse of computerized information or technology
- Refusing to report an academic misconduct violation or to testify as a witness to an incident of misconduct
- Cheating, the facilitation of cheating, and the inappropriate handling of examination material
IUSD maintains that it has a responsibility to ensure a professional climate and provide an equal standing ground for all students when it comes to academic matters. The school takes the matter seriously and mandates that all students must sign a professional conduct pledge once they enter the school.
Adjudication Process at IUSD
According to the handbook, any person who suspects that a student is engaging in academic misconduct may approach the student and remind them of their professional conduct oath. However, this is not mandatory. What is mandatory is that the person report the incident immediately to the Professional Conduct Committee (PCC) by submitting the Professional Misconduct Reporting Form. Once the PCC receives the form, it conducts a preliminary investigation to determine whether a possible violation occurred. If it has, the PCC then calls for a hearing, where it hears all testimonies, witnesses, and reviews evidence.
Whether you have just been informed of the possible charges against you or are scheduled to attend a hearing, having the support of the LLF National Law Firm’s Education Law Team is beneficial. With their commitment to justice and their familiarity with the workings of school adjudication processes, the team knows what is at stake and works tirelessly to decrease the likelihood of an unfavorable outcome.
Once the hearing ends, the PCC forwards their decision to the Faculty Council Executive Committee and the Dean. If the Dean and the Faculty Council do not agree on a final decision, the Faculty Council as a whole will vote on the matter and recommend sanctions. Fortunately, students may appeal this decision.
Appeals
Students who disagree with the PC or PCC’s decision may submit an appeal to the IUSD Appeals Committee. However, appeals are only granted based on the following grounds:
- The discovery of new and substantial information that was not available at the time of the hearing, and which would have affected the case outcome
- The existence of a procedural error that resulted in material harm that reasonably would have affected the outcome
- The sanctions imposed on the student are disproportionate to the alleged violation committed
Once the appeal is received by the Chair of the Appeals Committee and the President of the Faculty Council deliberate and make a recommendation, which they send to the Dean for a final resolution. Once the Dean decides, there are no further chances to file an appeal.
