MSU, Mankato takes academic progression seriously. Students are expected to maintain a minimum GPA and complete a certain number of credits to remain in good standing. Failure to progress can lead to warnings, suspension, and eventual expulsion, but students who have been disciplined can appeal.

Grade Point Average Requirements

MSU Mankato’s grade point average (GPA) requirements depend on the number of credit hours you’ve signed up for in a given semester. To stay in academic good standing at the school, you’ll need to maintain a minimum GPA of:

  • 1.7 for 0-30 credits
  • 1.85 for 31-59 credits
  • 2.00 for 60+ credits

In addition to maintaining a minimum GPA, you’ll also need to stay on top of the cumulative credit completion rate (CCR) requirement. MSU, Mankato requires a rate of at least 66.67 percent.

If you’ve transferred to MSU, Mankato, your GPA and cumulative credit completion rate will include all transferred credits and grades. Your CCR is calculated by dividing all of your cumulative earned credits by the number of cumulative attempted credits.

Academic Progress Penalties

Students at MSU, Mankato face penalties for failing to meet the school’s academic requirements. Those penalties escalate in severity as follows:

  • Warning: Students who fail to meet standards over the course of one semester will receive a written warning. This warning is meant to give you the opportunity to work toward achieving those standards. Once you’ve satisfied the minimum GPA and CCR requirements, the warning will be lifted.
  • Suspension: If your academic shortcomings extend to two semesters, the school will issue a notice of suspension. During this suspension period, you’ll be unable to enroll in courses at MSU, Mankato. Your suspension will be lifted once you meet the requirements for reinstatement outlined below.
  • Probation: Even after your suspension has been lifted, you’ll remain on probation. During probation, you’ll need to maintain a semester GPA of 2.5, as well as a semester CCR of 66.67%.

Reinstatement After Suspension

Once you’ve been suspended, you’ll need to work to get back in good standing with the university. During this time, you’re working toward being reinstated with probation, which will allow you to eventually become a student in good standing.

To be reinstated, you’ll need to spend a full year or three semesters not enrolled at MSU, Mankato. Once you’ve completed this process, you can submit an Application for Reinstatement from Academic Suspension following the procedure outlined in your written notice of suspension.

Before the semester begins, you’ll need to submit that letter, along with demonstrating the following:

  • Schedule an appointment with the advising center of your major two to three months prior to the start of the semester
  • Attend the scheduled appointment
  • Put together a Success Plan in coordination with the advising center
  • Select courses for the upcoming semester

Advisors at the school recommend returning either in a fall or spring semester since summer courses are more compressed. A longer semester will offer an easier transition back to university life.

Extenuating Circumstances and Reinstatement

In some situations, you can apply for early reinstatement from academic suspension due to extenuating circumstances at the end of those three terms. Eligible extenuating circumstances are:

  • Serious illness and/or hospitalization
  • Bereavement
  • Personal or emotional circumstances
  • Being a crime victim
  • Family illness

The Early Reinstatement Decision Process

Your request for reinstatement will go to the associate vice president for curriculum, who will work with the undergraduate academic reinstatement panel to review your request. This reinstatement panel is put together by the associate vice president of undergraduate education and is made up of:

  • One student relations coordinator representative
  • One faculty member
  • One appointee each from student government, university institutional diversity, universal global education, and the financial aid unit

Your request should include either your Student Success Plan or documentation of your extenuating circumstances.

The panel will take a look at a variety of factors to make its decision, including:

  • Your history of being in good academic standing with the university
  • Whether you have previous suspensions on your record
  • How long you’ve currently been suspended from MSU, Mankato
  • Previous academic performance at other schools
  • Where you stand in your progress toward achieving a degree
  • If extenuating circumstances are involved, whether those issues will continue to impede your academic progress
  • Where you stand in fulfilling your Student Success Plan
  • Whether the upcoming semester is the right fit for your reinstatement

You should get a response to your request within seven calendar days of the appeal deadline. The written decision will come via university email from the office of the provost.

Financial Aid and Academic Progression

At any university, financial aid can be impacted by academic progression issues. If MSU Mankato suspends you, you’ll also lose your eligibility for financial aid. Any aid you’re receiving will be suspended until you’re reinstated as a student.
