You managed to get into Saint Leo University, and that’s a major accomplishment. Getting in doesn’t guarantee you a degree, though. For that, you have to continue to go to class and continue to study. You have to start papers and projects the day they’re assigned and study for exams well ahead of time. In short, it’ll take far more work to get out of Saint Leo than it took to get in.
All of that is enough to worry about. What do you do when you find yourself facing a whole other set of challenges—systemic challenges? What do you do, for example, when an instructor refuses to implement your required course accommodations? Who do you talk to if you need to miss class to attend a funeral? Where do you go if your computer decides to “disappear” your term paper into the ether?
You have enough on your plate trying to master subjects like chemistry and accounting. Let LLF National Law Firm handle everything else. Our Education Law Team knows what you’re up against, and we’re experienced at helping students succeed. Not only can we help you navigate the often challenging bureaucracy of your university, but we can even show you some ways to use that bureaucracy to your advantage.

Academic Progress Standards at Saint Leo University
A high GPA doesn’t just happen. You have to work at it, one course at a time, one semester at a time. College is a marathon, not a sprint, and you have to make steady progress.
To help you do that, Saint Leo maintains something called an academic sanctions policy. The purpose of this policy is to set markers for you to meet so you can be sure you’re still on the right path. In addition, the policy sets up some consequences any time you happen to stray from that path.
- Good Standing: This is the goal. Keep yourself in good standing, and you can be pretty sure you’ll complete your degree on time. Saint Leo defines good standing as a GPA of 2.0 or better.
- Academic Warning: A slight dip below 2.0 means an academic warning. Note that while on academic warning status, you must meet with an advisor and develop an academic success plan. Saint Leo uses a sliding scale to determine who receives a warning and who receives a more serious academic sanction.
- 12-30 hours: Anything between 1.8 and 1.99 means a warning.
- 31-89 hours: Warnings occur if your GPA falls between 1.9 and 1.99.
- Above 90 hours: There are no warnings.
- Academic Probation: A more serious dip below 2.0 means academic probation. While on probation, you cannot hold office in a student organization and cannot pledge to a fraternity or sorority. You must retake any course you failed during the previous semester, and you may be asked to participate in study assistance programs or tutoring.
- 12-30 hours: Probation is issued if your GPA is between 1.5 and 1.79.
- 31-59 hours: Probation occurs when your GPA is between 1.7 and 1.89.
- 60-89 hours: Probation occurs when your GPA is between 1.9 and 1.99.
- Above 90 hours: There is no probation.
- Academic Suspension: Finally, if your GPA falls below a minimum number based on your credit hours, you face outright suspension from the university.
- 12-30 hours: Suspension happens if your GPA falls below 1.5.
- 31-59 hours: Suspension happens when your GPA is below 1.7.
- 60-89 hours: Suspension happens any time your GPA is below 1.9.
- Above 90 hours: Any GPA below 2.0 means suspension.
You can apply for readmission after a year away from school. However, you must be able to demonstrate that you understand what led to your academic deficiencies and that you have a clear plan for success moving forward. You should also note that your return is not guaranteed. Should Saint Leo deny your petition, your suspension becomes permanent dismissal.
Dealing With Academic Sanctions
If you’ve reached the point of suspension at Saint Leo University, it’s important you contact the LLF National Law Firm before you go through the process of submitting a readmission petition. We know exactly what the university is looking for in terms of personal statements and evidence of your academic potential. We can also make sure you dot every “i” and cross every “t,” so there’s no excuse to deny your petition.
If you contact us sooner, though, we can also offer some useful suggestions for keeping your GPA high and avoiding the threat of suspension in the first place. For example,
- If you’ve been dealing with extenuating circumstances, such as a long-term illness or a family crisis, you may be able to use those circumstances to get more time to improve. Your LLF National Law Firm attorney can show you how to file a formal appeal of your academic sanction.
- Low grades can be a sign of an undiagnosed learning disability. Your attorney can help you get free testing and, if necessary, appropriate course accommodations. You may also be entitled to drop low grades from your transcript.
- Never settle for unfair treatment in the classroom. If an instructor is mistreating you in any way, you should report this to that instructor’s department head. Then, your attorney can show you how to file a grade appeal once the semester is over.
- Another common source of low grades is academic misconduct allegations. If an instructor has accused you of cheating or plagiarism, we can work with you to appeal their findings and the severity of any classroom sanctions.
- There is no penalty for asking instructors for makeup and extra credit work. It could be that an extra lab assignment or a paper rewrite is enough to raise a borderline grade to the next level.
- You can also try negotiating with faculty on other terms. Even if your scores don’t add up to a passing grade, for instance, it might be worth asking an instructor to pass you based on the progress you made during the semester.
Whatever your situation, there’s a solution that can get you back on track academically. Your LLF National Law Firm attorney will help you identify it and implement it.
