The Specifics of Academic Misconduct at UIC College of Dentistry
UIC School of Dentistry requires students to take several pledges, including a handful that are specific to academic integrity. Upon beginning your studies at UIC SOD, you vow to:
-
Be honest
-
Represent records, data, and other information in an accurate manner
-
“Work independently when expected to do so on exams, projects, papers, and all other assignments.”
-
Never plagiarize or cheat
-
Refrain from examining confidential exam materials
-
Properly cite others’ contributions within your work
This is a standard slate of expectations for students of all kinds, and indeed for high-achieving dental students whose standards of integrity rise above the norm.
The school’s policies offer a catch-all for what may be deemed academic misconduct: “…Any action one might construe as ‘an unfair or undeserved academic advantage’ may qualify.
If a faculty member or fellow student reports you for what they believe to be an instance of academic misconduct, the accusation may quickly escalate into a formal disciplinary process.
The UIC College of Dentistry Can Decide Whether Academic Misconduct Is a Disciplinary Matter
UIC’s Student Disciplinary Policy explains that “…faculty members…may exercise discretion in making academic decisions and evaluations…based upon a student’s academic performance, even if that performance includes academic misconduct described in this policy, without making a referral for disciplinary action under this policy.”
In other words, it’s not a given that conduct typically regarded as academic misconduct will trigger a formal disciplinary process. Whether your case leads to an informal resolution or the formal disciplinary pipeline, having the LLF National Law Firm as your advisors will position you for a successful outcome.
We will negotiate tirelessly for you and prepare you for any elements of your defense you must handle yourself.
Informal Resolutions for Alleged Academic Misconduct
If a professor or other faculty member considers a student’s academic conduct “concerning,” but not significant enough to warrant formal discipline, then:
-
The student may be asked to meet with their professor to discuss the matter
-
A mediator may referee the discussion between the student and the professor, possibly helping them find a way to rectify the “concerning” behavior
-
The Dean of Students may prescribe a resolution (generally involving at least one sanction)
-
If the student agrees to the Dean’s sanctions, or an outcome negotiated between the student and the professor, the student generally has no right to appeal
The inability to appeal these kinds of informal resolutions should give you pause. You should never consent to such a disciplinary agreement without running that agreement by our team first.
The Formal Disciplinary Process for Alleged Academic Misconduct
If the student is not able to (or is unwilling to) reach an informal resolution, they will face the formal disciplinary adjudication process. The three most important stages of this process are:
-
The investigation: You can expect to hear questions about the alleged academic misconduct. The assigned investigator(s) should also seek relevant evidence (such as academic work related to the misconduct claim), aiming to find the truth.
-
The Student Conduct Hearing: These are described as “non-adversarial, fact-finding proceedings” overseen by a Hearing Committee. Upon conclusion of the hearing, four voting members will decide whether to find the student responsible for the alleged academic misconduct.
-
The appeal (when it is necessary): You have the right to file an appeal with the Dean of Students’ office. Grounds for filing such an appeal include the emergence of new evidence, a procedural error during the initial disciplinary proceedings, and sanctions that are not consistent with the alleged misconduct.
We may also have the opportunity to negotiate a settlement agreement following the investigation of the complaint. There may be no risk in these negotiations, and our Student Defense Team has an impressive track record of securing student-friendly deals for our clients.
In some cases, UIC SOD officials may impose interim measures while a case is adjudicated, such as an interim suspension. These measures can violate a student’s rights, and it is the sort of complication the LLF National Law Firm Team handles in stride.
What Do I Stand to Lose If UIC School of Dentistry Rules Against Me?
Academic misconduct is always a serious allegation. The allegation is even more glaring when leveled against a dental student, who is expected to live up to the highest standards of integrity and trustworthiness.
If you do not successfully defend yourself, you may bear the full weight of immediate sanctions, such as:
-
Formal reprimand
-
Probation
-
Remediation
-
Suspension
-
Expulsion
These kinds of sanctions can be a black eye on your career at the UIC College of Dentistry, serving as an ominous beginning to your professional career.
The LLF National Law Firm Student Defense Team will fight for the best possible resolution to these challenging circumstances you are facing. Whether you need to accept responsibility for the alleged wrongdoing or you want to vindicate yourself against exaggerated or groundless accusations, we will lead your defense effort.
