What to do When You Experience Antisemitism on Campus

Posted by Joseph D. Lento | Jan 19, 2024 | 0 Comments

Discrimination on campus is against most colleges' and universities' codes of conduct. Any time a student or faculty member is accused of discrimination, it will be adjudicated by a disciplinary hearing. Antisemitism is a form of discrimination, prejudice, and hostility that focuses on Jewish people. Right now, the United States is undergoing a rise in antisemitism, especially on college campuses. Many Jewish students do not feel safe attending classes or being present on campus for fear of being persecuted or assaulted.

If you or someone you love is a victim of antisemitism at the hands of a professor or other employee of your college or university, you must make sure they are held accountable. Lento Law Firm will reach out to the school and file a complaint on your behalf. Call 888-535-3686 today or schedule a consultation online.

Antisemitism is Discrimination

Unfortunately, antisemitism is often overlooked by school disciplinary committees. Many Jewish students are so used to microaggressions about their ethno-religion that they fall into the trap of ignoring them. However, it is incredibly important to bring these issues to the school administration, especially if a school employee or one of your professors is the one making these comments or behaving this way. The school should be taking disciplinary action against them.

For instance, Harvard University's non-discrimination policy states that discrimination that is based on a protected category or any other legally protected base is unlawful and prohibited by the school. One of the protected categories is religion. Another is genetic information or ancestry.

As Judaism is an ethno-religion, that is, it's both an ethnicity you can be born into and a religion you can convert to, it would fall under several of the protected categories. Thus, any form of discrimination that is based on the person being Jewish is prohibited at Harvard University. If a university employee or professor is caught violating the non-discrimination policy, the school can impose certain sanctions, including counseling, an official reprimand, a reduction in salary, community service, or unpaid leave.

Unfortunately, many schools are slow to bring judgment against their employees as it is a negative reflection on itself. Because of this, many complaints are brushed off or dealt with outside of a hearing. To ensure the school is being held accountable, and therefore holding the employee accountable for their conduct, it is important to reach out to a skilled student rights attorney
