The University of Pennsylvania was at the center of massive Pro-Palestine protests this spring, which saw an encampment on the part of students. The encampment was finally disbanded with support from local law enforcement after two weeks of negotiations between students and the administration were unproductive. Student organizers said the university's negotiations were carried out in bad faith. In contrast, the university condemned the student's encampment in general, claiming it disrupted campus operations and created fear, particularly among Jewish students.
The encampment was part of a national movement of student-led demonstrations against universities, one that was mainly focused on their financial ties to the Israel-Palestine conflict. The University of Pennsylvania grew in size after negotiations between students and the administration fell through. Organizers had been asking, among other things, for amnesty for student protesters and for the university to commit to disclosing their funding sources and divesting their endowments from entities that benefit from the war in Gaza.
Before getting law enforcement involved, the university had issued trespassing notices against its students and scheduled at least twelve disciplinary hearings for those participating in the protests, which the University claims violated the university's Guidelines on Open Expression. Disciplinary procedures for student organizers could result in the inability to graduate or continue with their education.
