FBI Charges Close Several Florida Nursing Schools
The FBI's Operation Nightingale alleges the sale of thousands of fake nursing school credentials to nurses, many of whom went on to pass the NCLEX and work at healthcare facilities across the nation. The FBI obtained criminal fraud charges against more than two dozen officials at several Florida nursing schools. A U.S. Attorney's Office press release summarizing the charges focused on six Florida nursing schools. But the criminal complaints in the cases implicated other student referral services and Florida nursing schools.
Criminal Charges Lead to Techni-Pro Site Visit
Here's what happened to Techni-Pro Institute, whom the federal criminal charges did not name. One of the several criminal cases charged a school official who was allegedly the student-services director and registrar at Palm Beach School of Nursing, another one of the now-closed Florida nursing schools involved in the scandal. But Florida's Commission for Independent Education, the state body approving nursing schools, identified that official as a staff member of Techni-Pro Institute. That connection put Techni-Pro Institute on the state's radar.
Techni-Pro Site Visit Reveals Unauthorized Program
As a result of that connection, staff members from Florida's Commission for Independent Education visited Techni-Pro Institute, meeting with school officials. The site visitors report that they saw no students at the Institute. School officials explained that the Institute offered its courses online. The site visitors' report indicates that the Commission has only approved general education, not practical nursing, courses for online offer. School officials also failed to produce student lists, as the site visitors requested. The report thus found the Institute operating in a manner contrary to public health and welfare, recommending closure.
