New research has revealed that being taught by uncertified teachers amid a staffing shortage has led to students in Texas losing months of learning. In Texas and elsewhere, poorly trained or uncertified teachers can often lead to gaps in learning, which can then impact a student's ability to obtain passing grades.

Staffing Shortages in Texas Lead to Rise in Uncertified Teachers
Texas public school districts are increasingly turning away from state-mandated certification requirements for teachers to cope with staffing shortages. However, a new study revealed how disastrous this has been for students. Students taught by uncertified teachers with zero classroom experience lost four months of reading and three months of math instruction on average. On the other hand, students taught by uncertified teachers who did have classroom experience performed on par with their peers.
A fifth of the new teachers hired did not have a bachelor's degree, and many of them had never taken the initial Texas certification.
Uncertified teachers make up as much as 45% of all new teachers hired in Texas, and four times as many uncertified teachers are being hired in rural districts as in urban ones. The research also found that being taught by uncertified teachers led to a rise in absenteeism, especially among early childhood and pre-K students. While teacher shortages are a real problem for Texas administration, students shouldn't have to pay the price.
Hold Your School District Accountable
Your student shouldn't have to suffer due to staffing shortages. With a decrease in educators, students are likely to receive subpar, rushed teaching - or be taught by uncertified educators. This is not acceptable and can set students back by months academically. It also hurts students who require special education support such as Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) the most and can even undo the academic progress they have made.
