Sexual Misconduct by Medical Students Can Damage Relationships, Reputations and More

Posted by Joseph D. Lento | Apr 02, 2021 | 0 Comments

When you're a medical professional or student, your reputation is priceless. It will open doors for you or shut them. Today, it takes little to shatter your reputation into a million pieces—making it critical to take care that your every action is above reproach.

However, sometimes this can be more easily said than done. In the highly-pressurized, familiar confines and communities of a medical residency, dramatic relationship incidents can play out to an awkward end. Even years later, these incidents have a way of reappearing at the worst possible juncture, destroying professional opportunities and even careers.

Add a little fame or success (and possible jealousy) to the mix, and harmful allegations can come from any direction. If you're a medical student, if you're approaching licensure or making a name for yourself and you believe that an ex could come forward with a damning account of past behavior, it's best to be proactive. The Lento Law Firm is ready to help without judgment. We're in the business of protecting your future from your past, no matter what.

A Social Media Medical Resident Faces Consequences for Misconduct Allegations

An Oregon Health and Science University doctor who had amassed a following on TikTok has recently faced accusations of both sexual assault and sexual harassment. The allegations stated that the so-called TikTok Doctor assaulted an employee at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center near the university. Text messages between the doctor and the plaintiff indicate that they had some kind of relationship prior to the incident, which occurred in March of 2020.

According to the plaintiff's allegations, the doctor - clad in OHSU scrubs - assaulted the female VA employee. She yelled, asked the doctor to leave, and followed up with a text that read, “Don't EVER surprise me by getting in my physical space.” The TikTok Doctor texted to apologize, and then followed up with more texts over the next day.

The plaintiff reported the incident to several authorities at OHSU. At that time, it became clear that another woman—previously leery of coming forward—had a similar story to tell regarding an assault by the TikTok Doctor. At the time, the TikTok Doctor escaped immediate repercussions. Now, a year later, the alleged victims are still requesting a formal trial.

If you're a medical student, you know what residencies are like: You're always at work, with little chance of a social life. Everyone you see is a coworker…and, as a result, sometimes interpersonal drama can happen. Relationships can easily sour. Anyone who has gained a little notoriety or success can become a target for allegations of improper behavior, even years later—and a mere allegation can have an outsized effect on your entire career.
