There's growing concern about vaping devices that look like regular school items. One such device, which looks like a highlighter, is causing schools to increase their anti-vaping efforts. This particular product from HighLight Vape is especially tricky because it works like a normal marker and comes in many bright colors.
If your child has found themselves in trouble at school over vaping, the Lento Law Firm can help. Call 888-535-3686 or fill out this contact form, and we'll be in touch.
The Vaping Epidemic in Schools
The vaping epidemic among U.S. middle and high school students continues to raise alarms. In 2022, approximately 2.55 million students in these age groups reported using e-cigarettes in a 30-day span. This equates to 14.1% of high schoolers and 3.3% of middle school students. Astonishingly, e-cigarettes are now the predominant tobacco product consumed by students in these age categories. While there are certainly consequences for students who are caught using these devices at school, many students feel the risks are worth it.
Schools' Multi-Pronged Approach to Vaping Prevention
To combat this escalating crisis, schools are dedicating substantial resources, both financial and in terms of personnel. Their approach is two-fold. David Mustonen, the communications director for Dearborn Public Schools in Michigan, emphasizes the importance of knowledge-based prevention. Schools are focusing on educating students and parents about the perils of vaping through informative presentations.
Physical detection is also on the rise. The Citrus County School Board has greenlit the introduction of Sammy, a vape-sniffing police dog, in school corridors. This dog is specifically trained to detect vape pens, nicotine, and THC. Though still in training, the initiative is showing early signs of success. David Vincent, who championed the K-9's inclusion, believes that Sammy will act as a significant deterrent, discouraging students from bringing vaping devices to school.
Concern Over Youth-Targeted Marketing
There's rising apprehension that vape device manufacturers are purposefully targeting younger audiences. The design of these devices for concealment, especially ones that mimic everyday school supplies like tape rolls, USB drives, and markers, has school safety specialists, including Vincent, deeply worried. The argument is that adults, the legal purchasers, should not require clandestine devices, indicating a possible intent to attract underage users.
Further compounding this concern is the alleged advertising of vaping products to the youth by brands like JUUL, leading many districts to pursue legal action against them.
