RFK Jr. Calls for Cell Phone Bans to Improve Student Mental Health

Posted by Joseph D. Lento | Jun 09, 2025 | 0 Comments

Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has suggested that school cell phone bans have a role in fighting the nationwide addiction crisis. Kennedy argues that addiction is a response to feelings of isolation and that excessive cell phone use and screen time contribute to feelings of loneliness and depression in children. By limiting or prohibiting cell phone use at schools, students may develop stronger relationships and build stronger in-person community support systems.

In recent years, some schools have implemented cell phone bans in response to state law or on their own initiative. When school behavior policies expand and prohibit previously acceptable behavior, students often find it difficult to adjust. This may be particularly true if cell phone usage is particularly addictive.

The Lento Law Firm defends students from extreme or unfair disciplinary actions, including allegations of cell phone misuse. If your child is accused of violating a school's cell phone policy or other student misconduct, our experienced attorneys can help. Cell Phone Bans May Lead to Student Discipline

For many students, cell phones are an essential communication tool, allowing them to connect with their parents, coordinate and monitor health-related care and information, and safely commute home or to extracurricular activities. These legitimate uses are often ignored or improperly addressed in hastily developed anti-cell phone policies.

Additionally, the enforcement of such policies can be inconsistent and may lead to harsh sanctions.

Schools often confiscate the device from a student caught violating the cell phone policy. In some instances, students who repeatedly violate cell phone policies may be prohibited from participating in school activities or face detention or suspension. These types of disciplinary actions may be included in a student's permanent school record.

Primary and secondary students navigating new rules about cell phones may be surprised by the severity of sanctions. It can be particularly unnerving to realize that a student's misunderstanding of new cell phone rules may adversely impact their future.

Let the Lento Law Firm Protect Your Student

Rules, including cell phone policies, must adjust to the changing needs of schools. Unfortunately, quickly developed rules that are sporadically enforced often create confusion for students. Additionally, if students are addicted to their devices, it may not effective or reasonable for schools to suddenly prohibit their use.

If your child faces discipline over allegations of cell phone misuse, we can help. The Lento Law Firm's experienced student discipline defense attorneys can analyze the misconduct allegations, related evidence, and school policy to develop a comprehensive defense strategy.
