Protecting Your Child from School Bullying and Violence

Posted by Joseph D. Lento | Apr 10, 2023 | 0 Comments

As a parent, your top priority is to ensure your child's safety, especially when they're away from home, such as at school. Unfortunately, not all schools take their responsibility to protect their students seriously, and incidents of bullying and violence can occur. The recent tragic death of 14-year-old Adriana Kuch in New Jersey highlights the importance of schools taking appropriate action to prevent bullying and violence.

What Happened to Adriana?

On February 1, 2023, Adriana was walking down a hallway at Central Regional High School when one of her classmates approached her and hit her in the face with a water bottle. Adriana fell to the ground, and several other students proceeded to kick and punch her repeatedly. A video of the attack was posted online, which showed that at least one student was cheering the attackers on.

Adriana was taken to the school nurse for treatment after the attack. However, her father, Michael Kuch, claims that the school did not do enough to help his daughter. He says that she blacked out during the attack and that it wasn't enough for her to just go to the school nurse.

Unfortunately, Adriana's tragedy did not end with the attack. Only two days after the attack, Adriana was found dead in her home in an apparent suicide. Her father believes that the attack played a significant role in her decision to take her own life.

Types of Bullying at School

Bullying at school can take many forms, and it's important for parents to be aware of the types of bullying that their children may face. The following are some examples:

  • Physical bullying: This can include hitting, pushing, shoving, kicking, and other forms of physical violence.
  • Verbal bullying: Verbal bullying involves using words to hurt, intimidate, or demean another person. This can include name-calling, teasing, insults, and threats. Verbal bullying can be just as harmful as physical bullying, and it can cause long-lasting emotional damage to the victim.
  • Cyberbullying: Cyberbullying involves using technology to harass, intimidate, or harm another person. This can include spreading rumors, sending threatening messages, sharing embarrassing photos or videos, and other forms of online harassment. Cyberbullying can be particularly harmful because it can reach a wide audience and can be difficult to escape.
