Pennsylvania Schools Receive State Grants To Combat Campus Sexual Assault

Posted by Joseph D. Lento | Jan 17, 2019 | 0 Comments

Pennsylvania has been an instrumental force in the effort to combat sexual assault on college and university campuses. Due to Governor Tom Wolf's unwavering passion about this issue and others like it, the state is at the forefront of the “It's On Us” campaign - a national movement launched by the Obama administration in 2014. The organization was intended to further conversations about how to deter the epidemic-like rates of sexual assault, sexual harassment, and other types of sexual misconduct on college campuses. Pennsylvania, along with a number of other states and advocacy groups pledged to take a stand.

Honoring that pledge, The Wolf Administration announced that the state will be providing schools with $1 million in grants to help combat sexual assault at 38 colleges and universities statewide. The grant is intended to put the conversations had about the issue into practice by creating and building programs that target the issue, as well as for training students and staff about Title IX compliance. Nevertheless, the overall goal is to simply make campuses safer. The Wolf administration has invested a total of nearly $3 million for grants since taking its pledge with It's On Us.

Wolf is particularly vocal about the issue because it hits home for him. “I'm the father of two daughters,” he said at a news conference while announcing the grants. “To me, that number is heartbreaking. It must not be tolerated by anybody.”
