Outdated Consent Education on College Campuses and Why It’s Problematic

Posted by Joseph D. Lento | Oct 01, 2022 | 0 Comments

One of the most critical communications colleges and universities must share with incoming students is consent education. “Consent education” refers to the sexual assault training and conversations that take place when students arrive on campus. These conversations are intended to help students understand what sexual consent is, what sexual assault is, and what they need to do to prevent becoming a victim of or unwittingly becoming a perpetrator of sexual assault.

Recent reports indicate that while schools are doing the right thing by making sure that sex education is taught to incoming students, they're behind the times when it comes to the types of sex that young people are engaging in today. This disconnect is worrying because students sometimes get themselves into situations that end up ruining not only their college careers but their entire futures.

What's “Trending” When It Comes to Sex on College Campuses?

When colleges do their consent training, they provide training that has students sitting in front of computers and completing online modules or listening to someone speak about the usual dos and don'ts regarding consensual sex on campus. One key area that these trainings most likely do not cover is rough sex.

Rough sex has become an extremely common type of sexual activity amongst many young people today, including college-aged students. A 2021 survey at a large Midwestern University revealed that 79% of the respondents said that they engaged in rough sex, and roughly 13% of those respondents said that they did so on a regular basis.

Based on the study, health professionals believe that colleges need to rework their consent education programs to include the phenomenon of rough sex. Rough sex includes behaviors like BDSM, sadism, masochism, bondage, discipline, and other types of practices. Universities need to refine their sex education programs to include these types of sexual behaviors so that students have a better understanding of what's happening in their world and how they can protect themselves and others.

Why Is It Important for Students to Learn More Updated Sex Education Info?

The danger with not teaching students about the latest sexual trends is that many students won't know what is normal and what is crossing the line. When you have a student who is interested in rough sex involved with another student who has never done it before and has no interest in doing it, you're heading for disaster. One party may think that they're just engaging in harmless kink, while the other person may believe that they are sexually attacked.

If Student A feels that they've been sexually assaulted and files charges against Student B with the school, Student B will face an uphill battle defending themselves. Once those charges are submitted, it can be very difficult for the accused student to defend themselves.

It's always in a school's best interest to make sure that all college students are taught the most up-to-date information regarding what's considered normal when it comes tio sex and how to protect themselves and others. That importance of full consent and what they can do to make sure that everyone is on the same page.
