Navigating Expulsions After Unintentional Collegiate Misconduct

Posted by Joseph D. Lento | Nov 07, 2023 | 0 Comments

It's easy to feel like you've bitten off more than you can chew when you go to college--in more ways than one, of course—whether you're startled by the intensity of your chosen major or surprised by the new social spheres you're encountering.

Something that many students experience when they attend college is finding themselves in unexpected situations that lead to misconduct allegations. It can be easier than you think to get roped into doing something you never thought you'd be involved in, and before you know it, you're facing sanctions and reeling in shock from what just happened.

If this sounds familiar to you, don't face your disciplinary proceedings alone.

Recently, at Syracuse University: Permanent Expulsions After an Offensive Video

Syracuse University made headlines after permanently expelling one of its fraternities after discovering an offensive video showcasing fraternity members.

In the video, some of the fraternity members were seen being involved in racist and antisemitic activities. After the video came to light, Syracuse University was swift in providing steep consequences — e.g., expulsion for the fraternity.

At first glance, this may make sense. The fraternity members were involved in a problematic event, so the school took action.

However, this also raises an important question: Did every student deserve such a permanent, potentially disastrous consequence? What if there were students who were unintentionally or inadvertently involved, or felt like they were under pressure to go with the flow?

The Long-Term Implications for Individual Students After Bad Group Decisions

If your student is associated with this type of incident, the effects can reach far into their future.

It's not an overreaction to say that this type of disciplinary action can make it more difficult than necessary for your child to get into different schools, finish their degree, or even get a good job.

This can sound scary — especially if you know for a fact that your child's involvement wasn't 100% their choice. Fortunately, your student has rights throughout the disciplinary process, including a right to be able to tell their side of the story.
