How to Learn From and Overcome Failure in College

September 17, 2025

It is a maxim in sports that a team must play to win, rather than playing “not to lose,” otherwise known as “playing scared.” The idea is that if you are too afraid of losing, you play too cautiously and never meet your true potential. Hamilton College has decided to take this idea into the classroom and encourage its students to leave their comfort zones and “fail better.” The Hamilton College ALEX campaign provides resources to allow students to take on challenges without fear of failure, and to learn from failure and “bounce back.” This is intended to create a cultural shift where students are more inclined to address issues and challenges head-on.

Failure in college can be frightening for many students, as some may face academic discipline. If you or your student faces academic discipline, call the experienced attorneys at the LLF National Law Firm. The “ALEX” Campaign

Hamilton College instituted the ALEX campaign to help students learn from past failures and stay resilient. This program has three pillars: advising, learning, and experiential support. Generation Z learners are more likely than previous generations to experience anxiety in the face of potential failure. These students faced the COVID-19 pandemic and were repeatedly forced to take classes online, which led to difficulties with attention spans and a general dread of online learning. Hamilton College aimed to help these students view these challenges as adaptations that require support, rather than as opportunities to fail. In short, Hamilton was trying to help its students stop “playing scared” and instead encouraged them to overcome academic obstacles and “win.”

However, while the concept of learning from failure is attractive, the unfortunate reality for many college students facing academic issues is quite different.

Facing Academic Failure and Challenges

Many students will face academic issues, including poor grades and discipline for failure to progress. These students may not be comforted that they are, in fact, learning from this humbling experience. This is because, unlike Hamilton, there may be very few supports in place to help these students succeed. Instead, students may need the help of an experienced student defense attorney. Responding to academic issues must involve a review of the source and solution to the problem. This can involve:

  • Looking carefully at academic standards.
  • Reviewing grades and transcripts for errors or grading policy violations.
  • Addressing extenuating circumstances and asking that the college take these circumstances into account before imposing discipline.
  • Arguing for a different standard.
  • Looking at potential mental health defenses.
  • Negotiating with the college to formulate a strategy for success.
  • Addressing issues informally and creatively.

With time and the proper support in place, most students can overcome academic failure.
