Fourteen cadets are serving a range of punishments after pictures of them wearing Ku Klux Klan-like costumes surfaced.  The incident involved the cadets' participation in singing Christmas carols as ordered by upperclassmen at the school.  The cadets were expected to sing dressed in costumes.  The costumes themselves came to be as part of a "Ghosts of Christmas" skit.  An investigation conducted by the school found that the cadets did not intend to be offensive and had no ill intent, but punishment has been both severe for some of the participants as well as unique in light of The Citadel being a military school.  One student was dismissed from school and two students were suspended for a semester.  Other cadets' punishments include marching back and forth in the barracks shouldering a rifle for fifty minutes at a time and others will have to march tours for either three weeks or until the end of the semester.
