Famous People Get Expelled Too: Part 1

Posted by Joseph D. Lento | Dec 04, 2022 | 0 Comments

Getting into trouble in high school or college is nothing new. Many students find themselves in the principal or dean's office explaining their side of the story. In fact, these issues are so common that even our favorite celebrities have found themselves in similar circumstances.

Woody Allen

When famed director Woody Allen was a student at New York University, he was expelled for having terrible grades. At NYU, students are expected to maintain at least a 2.0 cumulative grade point average each semester. If students fall below this threshold they will be placed on academic probation. Students who cannot bring their grades back up or complete 16 credits with a “C” or higher will be referred for a dismissal hearing.

While times and policies may have changed from when Woody Allen went to college, his grades must have fallen below the specified threshold. If he had been able to work with an attorney-advisor, it could have prevented his expulsion. Attorney-advisors are experts in academic progression cases like this. They would have been able to create a strong defense, or negotiate with the administration on his behalf, to prevent his expulsion.

Owen Wilson

Another famous celebrity, Wedding Crashers star Owen Wilson, was expelled from the prestigious high school St. Mark's School of Texas for stealing his teacher's geometry textbook to copy the answers to the upcoming test. Like most high schools in the country, students at St. Mark's are expected to refrain from academic misconduct. One of the illicit actions that constitutes academic misconduct is using or attempting to use any materials on an exam without the instructor's explicit permission. By stealing his teacher's textbook to copy the answers, Owen Wilson committed academic misconduct and was punished accordingly.

All students are supposed to have due process rights, which entitle them to defend themselves against accusations of academic misconduct. While it is unknown whether Owen Wilson had an opportunity to defend himself, if he had, and had worked with an attorney-advisor, he would have had a better chance at receiving a less harsh punishment.

How an Attorney-Advisor Can Help

If you or someone you know has been accused of academic misconduct or academic progression issues, like Woody Allen and Owen Wilson, getting the help of an attorney-advisor is the best way to prevent any unnecessary negative consequences. Once you are notified of an investigation or hearing into the matter, you must present a strong defense.
