Do Schools Encourage Students to Cheat?

Posted by Joseph D. Lento | May 04, 2025 | 0 Comments

It is no secret that engaging in academic misconduct, or cheating, is rampant in high schools and universities. Although cheating has been a problem for a long time, as a result of AI, electronic devices, and other technology, it has never been easier to cut a corner and engage in academic misconduct.

The Pressure to Achieve Has Caused Many Students to Resort to Cheating

A recent article has raised eyebrows for its stark description of the pressure students are under to achieve and the resulting lack of concern about cheating. The article surveyed students across many grade levels and found that 65% had admitted to cheating and 81% had said that they had seen other students cheat. Perhaps more shockingly, 77% of the students believed that cheating is justified in some circumstances.

This survey suggests that not only are a majority of students engaging in academic misconduct, but even a higher percentage of students believe that it is okay to cheat in at least some circumstances. Many students feel the pressure that parents, peers, and society have placed on them to achieve academically. Extracurricular activities, which are highly valued by many universities when accepting applicants, often leave students with inadequate time to prepare for exams and assignments. The knowledge that other students are cheating often leaves students feeling that they have no other option but to cut corners.

AI and Other Technologies Are Too Tempting to Many Students

While cell phones and other technology have given students ample opportunity to cheat, there is no question that AI has raised the stakes when it comes to academic misconduct. The prevalence of new and powerful AI tools has proved too much of a temptation for some students. The article reported that almost 44% of students have used AI to brainstorm for ideas, while 27.5% have used AI to generate text, which they then modified and passed off as their own work.

Schools have implemented countermeasures to detect the use of AI. Many high school teachers and college professors have taken an aggressive stance toward the use of AI and will actively bring charges against any student suspected of academic misconduct.
