A New Technology Tool Brings New Charges
Everyone has heard of the power of Open AI's free ChatGPT artificial-intelligence tool. Its proponents claim that ChatGPT can write credible blogs, articles, and even plays and books, with little more than a prompt.
However, students have also discovered that ChatGPT can write papers and essays. As an article in a popular technology journal reports, their instructors are receiving assignments turned in, looking suspiciously like they might not be the product of a certain student's research and writing but instead the work of ChatGPT.
School academic misconduct charges may follow, bringing with them the risk of school suspension or expulsion. Yet some of the accused students didn't cheat. Plagiarism detection programs, like Turnitin, admit that they sometimes flag plagiarism or ChatGPT use when the writing is actually the student's original work.
If you are accused of cheating with ChatGPT, call the Lento Law Firm at 888.535.3686, or complete this brief form.
Is Using ChatGPT Cheating?
Even if a student does use ChatGPT, doing so may not be cheating. As the above article reports, instructors at all levels, from grade school through college and beyond to graduate school, are taking different approaches.
Some instructors embrace the artificial-intelligence technology, permitting, encouraging, or even requiring students to use ChatGPT or a similar program to generate topics, suggest research, or challenge a student's own premises. However, other instructors fear that their instruction will lose a critical component, cheating their students out of doing their own work.
If you or your student face questions relating to ChatGPT or other AI use, consider carefully the instructor's syllabus and assignment, the school academic code, and any other school, department, or field guides on how, when, and whether to use the tools. And ask the instructor before engaging in anything that risks misconduct charges.
Defending ChatGPT Misconduct Charges
If you already face such charges, then get the representation of our Student Defense Team. Avoid admitting to academic misconduct charges, whether involving ChatGPT misuse or other allegations, when we may be able to help you raise a defense and negotiate an early voluntary dismissal.
Schools have academic misconduct procedures to protect your interests and rights. Our attorneys may be able to invoke those procedures for an early informal conference at which we may be able to help you resolve the charges without a finding of misconduct on your academic record.
