Resident Assistants (RAs) are right in the thick of things on a college campus. They live in college housing, move easily between student residences, know every student, and understand how and when campus authority keeps watch over the student body. In many ways, RAs are perfectly positioned to break the rules.
RAs are supposed to create safe, encouraging environments to help foster student success. But they are not immune to the temptations that seemingly exist everywhere on a college campus. Just like any college student, the RAs can be tempted to do things that leave them facing disciplinary—or even legal—trouble on a college or university campus. When RAs themselves break the rules or the law, they may face serious consequences. Their behavior may amount to student misconduct or even a crime. It's the kind of accusation that may color the rest of their college experience—and beyond. If you are a college RA facing accusations of wrongdoing, there is a lot at stake. Alcohol: A Serious Code of Conduct Violation
Alcohol use on college campuses can be a complicated matter. After all, some students may be over the legal drinking age. However, most schools' policies around alcohol passion, consumption, and distribution draw tight guidelines around its use—guidelines that are difficult for most college students to follow. And resident policies may differ from RA policies. For example, a student over 21 may be allowed to consume alcohol, but only in their dorm room, away from anyone under 21, with their door closed. But an RA may be prohibited from using alcohol at all. A violation may result in termination of employment and expulsion from their living situation.
Drugs: Violation or Expulsion
Similarly, students—even RAs—may be tempted to use drugs in college. This may carry a heavier penalty. In cases of using or possessing drugs, RAs would definitely be removed from their position—a penalty that can throw their financial and housing situation into peril. RAs may also be removed from the school, temporarily or even permanently.
Failure in a job as an RA can have a lasting impact on a student's academic and professional life. RAs are generally respected and viewed as responsible, community-minded students by future employers and other academic institutions. Running afoul of a college's code of conduct or even the law may have a serious impact on their future.
