CheggMate: What Is It, and Can You Get in Trouble for Using It?

Posted by Joseph D. Lento | Sep 09, 2023 | 0 Comments

The company Chegg has been around since 2005 and originated as an affordable college textbook rental company. As the years progressed, the company evolved into an on-demand tutoring company with tons of learning resources from experts around the world. In the past few years, Chegg has continued to pump out new resources and services to its customers, including CheggMate.

CheggMate is Chegg's new program that combines the power of Chat GPT-4's cutting-edge AI systems with Chegg's extensive content library and subject-matter experts to help students learn faster. As it is an AI program, the experience is not only adaptive and personalized but also accurate, effective, and helpful. However, AI programs are grey areas for most colleges around the country, and they are actively working on where to draw the line between “tutor” and “cheating.”

How Does CheggMate Uphold Academic Integrity?

According to their website, Chegg's number one focus is helping students achieve their best, both academically and beyond. They also endeavor to uphold academic integrity and work hard to create a learning environment that respects students, faculty, and educational institutions. To ensure this happens, Chegg has created tools that detect when students improperly use their services.

One such resource is called Honor Shield, which helps educators who are administering an online exam block Chegg from providing students with the answers. Chegg also has an explicit honor code policy that flags misuse – such as when students try to use the service while taking an exam or doing graded work or if they try to pass off Chegg answers as their own work in academic assignments.

When a student is accused of violating Chegg's Honor Code, whether by Chegg or the university, their account will be terminated and their materials removed. Moreover, while Chegg will no longer send colleges and universities student data, professors and official college representatives can request that Chegg conduct honor code investigations if they believe a student has violated it or committed academic misconduct.

Is CheggMate Allowed?

Whether CheggMate is allowed at your school will largely depend on the school's policies. If your school does not have a blanket policy against CheggMate and you have been using it to aid your learning experience, there is no reason for you to be disciplined. However, if a school without a policy learns of widespread CheggMate use among its students, it could enact a policy banning its use, at which point, if you continue to use it, you could be punished.
