Celebration or Consequences? The Aftermath of Vandalism at UConn

Posted by Joseph D. Lento | Jul 26, 2023 | 0 Comments

Following a recent victory in the NCAA men's basketball tournament, several students were arrested during post-game celebrations.

Why? The students, most of them from UConn, were allegedly implicated in several destructive and vandalizing acts. The acts of vandalism included smashed windows, a damaged police cruiser, a flipped van, and damaged light posts.

Investigations to determine the extent of and responsibility for these actions are ongoing. This has not stopped UConn from initiating disciplinary action.

Some of the involved students, who were accused but not yet tried or convicted, have already been expelled.

School Policies: The Essential Difference Between Arrest and Expulsion

It's important to realize that there are many important distinctions between the actions taken above.

There's a difference between being arrested and being tried and convicted.

The students, in this case, have not yet been declared guilty in a court of law. They were merely arrested. Yet they have already faced severe consequences, including expulsion, even though their responsibility has not yet been truly determined.

This only serves to emphasize that academic institutions can decide to mete out consequences outside of the legal process. Being expelled also has incredibly far-ranging consequences. If you're "only" facing school discipline, you absolutely must retain the premier services of a Student Defense Team. The stakes are far higher than you may think.

Here's Exactly Why Academic Discipline, Even Without Police Involvement, Can Be Devastating

If you get involved in a disciplinary dispute with your school, there's a chance you might think your situation is totally manageable (at first). You might shrug it off as something that just happens to people or something that won't really impact your status as a full-time student. You might even be relieved that the police aren't involved.

Realize this:

The repercussions that can happen solely within your school's jurisdiction can be even more detrimental to you and your academic future than a legal proceeding.

For example, if you get expelled, it can be wildly difficult to gain admittance to another school or even get a job in the future.

If you're facing these types of academic charges, you need to act now.
