Everyone needs a chance to blow off some steam and let loose, but sometimes things can go too far, especially if you're away from campus for a conference or other work-related event. For university employees, inappropriate behavior – even when it happens off campus – can lead to disciplinary action and even the end of employment. Recently, Michigan State University accepted the resignation of one of its deans after he allegedly drank too much and misbehaved at an off-campus function.
Problems at the Hotel Bar
While serving as MSU's Dean of Students, Anthony Williams Jr. attended the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators' November 2022 regional conference in Chicago. Williams became intoxicated and unruly after drinking in the hotel bar and made unwanted advances toward a female convention attendee, according to news reports. The hotel's security staff eventually threw him out of the bar.
Williams submitted his voluntary resignation to MSU in early 2023 but did not publicly admit that the alleged incident led to his decision to leave. In a response letter, the university's Senior Vice President for Student Life and Engagement, Vennie Gore, said William's behavior at the convention showed a serious lack of judgment. The senior vice president said the episode was especially troubling since, as a dean, Williams was responsible for handling student conduct violations involving substance abuse, relationship violence, and sexual misconduct. Gore claimed that Williams' actions at the conference undermined his trustworthiness as a dean, media reports said.
Misconduct Can Impact Employment
As this case shows, inappropriate behavior by school faculty and staff — whether on or off campus — can place their employment status at risk. Colleges and universities have an interest in maintaining their reputations. An institution does not want to employ someone whose actions may threaten the school's standing in the community.
At the same time, employees want to maintain their own professional and personal reputations and do not want to be unfairly accused of bad behavior. Such accusations can have serious consequences and may lead to the end of their employment, whether by resignation or termination. As everyone knows, the loss of a job can be devastating. Not only are wages lost, but retirement benefits and health insurance are also jeopardized. In addition, the accused person may have difficulty gaining future employment.
