In June 2020, a University of Portsmouth radiography student took his own life after facing accusations of plagiarism on his final dissertation.
One month before this tragic event, the student had learned his dissertation would receive zero credit due to plagiarism. Later, the student was found dead after having overdosed and suffered a heart arrhythmia. His suicide note mentioned that, for him, it seemed things had gone wrong “one too many times.”
While the coroner does not believe that the allegations of plagiarism were the sole contributor to the student's actions, the pressure caused by these allegations certainly did not help.
The Benefits of Relying on a Strong Defense Through Overwhelming Misconduct Charges
Today, an accusation of plagiarism can confer seemingly inescapable damage to a young academic's reputation. Experiencing a sudden shift towards being in an adversarial position against your school is certainly stress-inducing, to say the least.
At the Lento Law Firm, we want you to know that we are here to help support struggling students and relieve any pressure they may feel by assisting with a strong defense.
By relying on a student defense advisor to manage an intense investigation, disciplinary process, negotiations, and more, struggling students will have more time to:
- Concentrate on their mental health
- Spend time with their loved ones
- Move towards successful completion of other coursework
- Perform rebuilding work for their reputation
- Work with their school to move past the event
- Invest in resting, eating, and relaxing as well as possible
It may not seem like these are crucial processes. They are. When you're in the midst of an investigation, you need to be able to make good choices. You need to be ready to present coherent arguments. You need to be able to show your school you can move past any alleged past transgressions.
Likely, this will be more to manage than you realize. That's why it's key to reach out for help during your student misconduct disciplinary processes.
